              WESTWOOD A390 - MBM REVIEW

Motor Boats Monthly have recently reviewed the new Westwood A390 excerpts of which can be seen below. For the full article see the April edition of Motor Boats Monthly.

"This 40-footer has been designed to lure buyers away from the steel boat sector and with its extra pace it is a real force to be reckoned with.
Rather than going down any tried and tested route, Westwood asked designer Andrew Wolstenholme to give it a steel boat look, which not only gives it an air of authority but also distances it from the usual soft look that is the norm among moulded craft. Staying true to its inland roots, Westwood also ensured that the boat would be available with a river friendly single engine as well as the twin engine version that was tested. The A390's bow sections have the same sharp entry and high chine that fabricating in steel invariably gives. However the clever part is that he has achieved this look without the end result becoming boxy or slab-sided. It was a bold decision to take this route but it has delivered a smart, definable alternative to what we are used to seeing in this class.

The A390's layout is pretty orthodox. Two double en-suite cabins, a lower dinette, galley and an upper saloon create a comfortable home-from-home, that is practical and well-finished without being overly frivolous. The generous saloon has sociable U-shaped seating.

The A390 boasts excellent side decks that you can waltz along safely without the need to hang on. This feeling of security first emanates from the aft deck thanks to its bulkwark-like coamings that put plenty of solid material between you and the sea. The wet bar is a particularly useful addition to the aft deck layout and comes with a sink, cupboard and bin as standard but will take a barbeque grill and fridge.

The sea was particularly mucky on the day of the seatrial with uncomfortable short, deep waves pushed about by 20 knots of wind. If anything was going to show up slamming, indifferent handling, creaks and groans, these conditions were it. We were delighted, therefore, that once we eased in to semi-planing mode (16-18 knots) the hull and fit-out never uttered a single squeak and gave a very decent solid ride even in to the head sea. All A390's whether single or twin, come with a bowthruster fitted as standard and as part of the bathing platform moulding, there is a built-in tunnel to house an optional stern thruster.

From the company's experience of supplying ready spec'd boats for its inland customers for an all in price, the yard has followed the same route with the A390. This means that aside from some electronics, there is little you would want to add. A bow thruster, trim tabs, heating, shore power, fender racks, and even a rudder indicator and TV antenna are all included as standard, plus Westwood have gone the extra mile and fitted electric toilets. So where does that leave the A390 among the home grown competition? Having done our best to check twin engine specs and prices, Westwoods A390 comes out over £30k less than the Haines 400 and some £75k cheaper than the Broom 395."

SEALINE TRIUMPH AT THE MOTOR BOAT OF THE YEAR AWARDS

              PRESS RELEASE 11th January 2011

Sealine International collected the coveted award for Best Flybridge Motor Boat under 55 feet from the IPC Motor Boat of the Year awards held at the Savoy Hotel in London on 10th January. The winning F42 launched in September 2010 has received plaudits from both press and customers alike. A truly innovative design that has transformed the way space and light can been used on a flybridge boat of this size. Offering unrivalled space for entertaining, the F42 is a stylish practical cruising boat that can sleep five in comfort in a very flexible living space. It also has the advantage of joystick controlled Volvo IPS engines for maximum manoeuvrability.

In making their decision the judges from the two leading motor boating titles Motor Boat and Yachting and Motorboats Monthly had this to say about Sealine's award winning model "It was a unanimous decision, when a boat has so many class bests in a market already packed with exceptional craft, when it succeeds so completely in its goal to be the hardest working flybridge on the water then you have to bow to the inevitable - there is only one winner and it is the Sealine F42."

Chris O Connor Sealine's Managing Director said "We are absolutely thrilled to receive this very prestigious award. It is an endorsement of the hard work and dedication of the team at Sealine who have created this award winning boat; from the designers and naval architects to the production staff at our factory in Kidderminster all of whom have helped make this boat such an enormous success since its launch last September. The F42 continues to draw attention and is currently on show at the Tullet Prebon London Boat show at ExCel in London's docklands."

              SEALINE ANNOUNCE MAJOR INVESTMENT PLANS

Sealine returned to the London Tullet Prebon Boat Show with plans for their latest model and a commitment to launch eight new boats over the next three years.
At a press briefing on 7th January Sealine's Managing Director, Chris O'Connor announced that the company would be making a significant investment into new models. We are fully committed to expanding our model range and growing the company. We believe this investment is the right strategy for the business at the right time and will secure future success for Sealine. As a result of the strong demand for our recent new boats and this additional investment in future models, we will be hiring over 50 new employees to work in engineering and manufacturing. He confirmed that Sealine would be building on the successful introduction of new dealers during 2010 in France, Turkey, UK, and Spain with inroads into South America and the Far East. He also stated that the innovative marketing activities that proved to be so successful in 2010 would continue. There will be 12 Sealine Experience Roadshows around the UK with a further 7 new events in Spain. The Big Splash weekend for which Sealine is once again the major sponsor will take place from 29th - 31st July, in Cowes, Isle of Wight. It is a unique opportunity for owners to share their adventure with family and friends. As a company, and with our Dealers in the UK and elsewhere in Europe, we will be present at events and boat shows for over 200 days this year.
Chris then unveiled the layouts for the revolutionary new sports cruiser due for launch this summer. The SC42 represents a complete rethink on how we can make the best use of space on a 42 foot open sports cruiser. A bold and innovative new design, the SC42 will offer more social space than on any other cruiser of this size. One of the most significant design features is the cockpit layout which makes maximum use of the full beam width of the boat for relaxing, dining and entertaining. The SC42 has many additional innovations in the saloon, cabins and convertible roof system that, together with the proven handling, will make this a complete package of style, space and performance.

We are looking forward to a good 2011 and to sharing the Sealine adventure with you in the coming months.

Broom start building boats again after re-organisation

              INFORMATION for immediate release. 19.10.2010.

Broom Boats Ltd, Britain's longest established boat-building firm, is to start building its power cruisers again after a major re-organisation. It is only three months after it changed hands under difficult financial circumstances.

The news, which should reassure many boat owners and those in the Norfolk Broads boat construction business, follows actions by new investors who took the company over in July and have since carried out a major financial re-organisation.

Boat-builder C.J.Broom Ltd., the subsidiary company of 112-year-old Broom Boats Ltd., of Brundall, Norfolk, went into voluntary liquidation two months ago with major debts and redundancies.

Today (Tuesday October 19th, 2010) investor Mark Garner, now managing director, said: "I am pleased to say we have completed a total business review and re-organisation. We also have a new dealer network which has provided us with sales worth £2.5 million, sufficient for us to re-employ some of our past talented boat-building craftsmen.

"As a result we have been able to appoint a new and inspired management team, confirm total staff of 74 to both build boats and run marina services as one company, Broom Boats Ltd."

The new sales are for up to seven new cruisers being built in the next 12 months and work has already started. The Broom marina and boat service and repair business which always operated under the Broom Boats Ltd banner did not lose money in its own right and is largely un-affected.

Mr Garner also announced a new major investor and director to aid development. He is entrepreneur Tony Chancellor of Norfolk.

In future, prospective owners will buy only from dealers, not direct from Brooms. The new dealer network includes two new firms. One is Norfolk Yacht Agency, a sales organisation which moves around 300 new and used boats a year and which has already brought in an order worth more than £650,000 for a Broom 450, twin engined luxury cruiser capable of 30 knots.

James Fraser, who owns NYA, said: "We hope our representation of Broom here in East Anglia but also among our many contacts elsewhere should help their growth."

Broom have also appointed a new Thames region dealer, Thames Boat Sales of Bray, run by Dominic Smulders. He and the other existing dealers, in Ireland, Holland and Germany, also Newark, have confirmed or have pending, subject to finance, sales worth up to a further £2 million which should keep the reduced building force busy for a year.

A new Broom 395 is already in build at the yard and a 450 will start within the next few days.

              Ends.
